NPL Upset of the Week

Not a lot of optimism for the Giants taking on the Packers this week. The Giants had the support of just three pickers, making them 92.31% underdogs in this Upset of the Week!

ESPN Experts vs The NPL

The NPL players were better than the ESPN experts this week. The ESPN experts lead the series 44-31-37.

Ryan vs Josh

Ryan couldn’t get a groove going this season, the opposite of streaky for better or worse. He settles in at 7-7 on the season, 3rd in the Prophet Division, and while his accuracy has trended up this year, he finishes 23rd in the league there.

Josh started the season on a strong note at 5-2 in the first half, but the second half didn’t see the same success. Josh finishes 8-6 on the year thanks to clutch MM guesses, but falls short of the Wild Card by two correct picks. He ranked 15th in pick accuracy.

Berkenbile vs Michael

Berkenbile had a rough go in 2023, posting a career worst 4-10 record which included a six game losing streak that wasn’t broken until Week 13. He finished t-27th in pick accuracy.

Michael heads to the post season for the third year in a row after collecting his first division championship while finishing with a personal best 10 wins, and settling in at t-8th in pick accuracy.

Vince vs Matt

Vince rested his starters this week, because he claimed his first division championship with an 8-6 record, despite ranking 26th in pick accuracy. This marks Vince’s first trip to the playoffs since 2013!

Matt didn’t do much better in picks, ranking t-24th, and his 5-9 record means he will spend this post-season as a spectator for the first time in his NPL career.

Erik vs Samuel

Erik started the year full of confidence but the NPL quickly corrected that. He finished 31st in the league in pick accuracy and settled in at 5-9 on the year. But, by default, he’s our 2023 Rookie of the Year!

Sam tied for 20th in pick accuracy, finishing 7-7 on the season. He’s now two years removed from his surprise appearance in the Seer Cup back in 2021.

Cari vs Jerry

Cari made a real run for the league record of 14 losses in a season, but a pesky win in Week 7 and another in Week 10 prevented that from happening. Cari hasn’t been over 50% in pick accuracy since 2019, and finishes this year at 41.48%, a new personal low (and last in the league).

Jerry stumbled out of the gate in 2023, dropping his first three games of the season. From there, every step forward was met with one or two steps back, and he settled in at 6-8, his worst finish since 2017, the last time he missed the playoffs. His pick accuracy of 53.57% was just 22nd in the league.

Ricky vs Brent

Ricky edged out Josh for the final Wild Card with two more correct picks on the season. He finished 8-6, one game off his best mark (back in 2007!) of 9-5, but posted a career best average MM difference (AMMD) of 7.43. His pick accuracy place him t-11th in the NPL.

Coming in strong in the “Stats That May Surprise You” category, Brent snags his first division championship since 2013! That’s right, Adam, LeScoot, and Brandon all have more Psychic Division banners in their rafters in the last ten seasons than Brent. Wild. But, he runs away with it this year, posting an NPL record 13 wins! His accuracy placed him 2nd in the league behind Kevin.

Brandon vs Bette

Brandon once again was among the most accurate pickers in the league, this time finishing t-3rd, but he can’t quite dethrone his opponent. He finishes 8-6 on the year and snags a Wild Card.

Bette snags her third straight division championship on an impressive 11-3 record, tying her previous bests (2007, 2021). She finished 6th in the NPL in accuracy and t-2nd in wins.

Miranda vs Ethan

NPL Title Belt Match!

Miranda was a victim of her own picking this year. She finished 5-9 on the season, but only reached 7+ correct picks three times. Her 29th ranked pick accuracy is an off-season focus.

Ethan wants 2023 back. He posted his lowest pick accuracy and fewest wins since his 2018 season, right after a career best 11 wins last season. Ethan joined Sam at t-20th in pick accuracy. The NPL Title Belt will stay with Ethan until Week 1 next season!

Kelly vs Rachel

Kelly had a fine season, despite this loss to close out the year. At 8-6, she posted her best record and highest pick accuracy since 2018, finishing t-3rd in the latter. She claims her second division championship banner.

Rachel snagged this victory by one correct pick. But, she needed just a few more to claim the division. Instead, she falls four correct picks shy of the division championship and settles on a Wild Card. She finished t-8th in pick accuracy and makes her first appearance in the post season since winning it all in 2021.

Travis vs Corey

Travis finished 3-11 last year with a sub-50% pick accuracy and he bested that this season. Again 3-11, Travis is 16-40 over the last four seasons. His pick accuracy placed him 30th in the league.

Corey was middle of the pack in accuracy (t-15th) and posted a 6-8 record on the year, thanks to a four game losing streak right in the middle of the season. He’ll be watching from home one year removed from competing in the Conference Championship.

Andrew vs Laci

Andrew has posted just two winning records since his debut in 2009. His 11-3 record is t-2nd in the league with Bette, good enough for an easy Auspex Division championship banner (his first) and finished 5th in accuracy, despite not submitting picks this week.

Laci had a fine season, finishing 8-6 for the second season in a row. Her pick accuracy of 57.86% (t-11th) was also her best since 2016 and her second best in her career. Unfortunately, she needed just TWO MORE correct picks to steal a Wild Card. Instead, she’s on the outside looking in.

Steven vs Brian

Steven was right in the thick of things up until his four game losing streak from Weeks 9 through 12. That did more damage than he could recover from and he settled at 7-7 on the year with a t-11th pick accuracy, though he did finish Top 5 in AMMD with 8.43, which is impressive!

Brian is one year removed from a stellar season in which he claimed four major trophies (Player of the Year, Most Accurate, AYST, AMMD). But he hasn’t been the same since that Seer Cup loss. He follows that year with a career worst 6 wins and a t-17th ranked pick accuracy.

Chris vs Joel

Chris bounces back from three disappointing campaigns to win the division for the first time since 2019. His 19th ranked accuracy and 8-6 record was enough to snag the banner, thanks largely to this clutch win over Joel.

Joel once again finishes among the best in the league in accuracy (7th), but is the only player in the Top 10 not moving on to the playoffs. Instead, he sits at home with a 7-7 record, which is haunted by a 1-3 performance in MM tiebreakers.

Jennifer vs Kevin

Jennifer had a strong showing in the second half of the season, posting a 5-2 mark including this loss. Unfortunately, this loss was a must-win for Jennifer, so she’s sitting out this post season. She finished t-17th in pick accuracy.

Kevin had a nifty four game winning streak in the middle of the season that pushed him to the top of the division and he held on to snag his third division champion banner in the last four seasons. His 9-5 record was 5th best in the league, but his pick accuracy was first!

DaVena vs Axell

At 6-5 entering Week 12, DaVena was in a good spot to make a push for the post season. Unfortunately, she had two solid weeks go down as L’s, before dropping this spoiler game to Axell. She finishes 6-8 on the season, with a 14th ranked pick accuracy (57.14%).

Axell started off the year red hot, 6-0, but finished just 2-6 from then on. Axell posted a 58.57% accuracy, good enough for t-8th in the league. He avoids an embarrassing playoff elimination given that hot start by taking out DaVena in this must-win.

Adam vs LeScoot
Game of the Week

Adam and LeScoot get the value brand PRIIIIIIIME TIIIIIIME showcase and it went down to the wire! Adam probably started the season with some optimism after starting 3-2 on the year. Then, the losing streak started. And that optimism was dead in its tracks. Some say that losing streak is still going today! Adam finished a career worst 3-11, t-27th in pick accuracy.

LeScoot was the opposite of Adam in that there wasn’t any optimism early in the season. LeScoot started an ice-cold 0-6, the Anti-Axell if you will. But he rallied! He closed out the season on a blistering pace, 7-1. Some of that magic in the first half of the season and he’s looking at the playoffs. Instead, he finishes 7-7 on the year, and t-24th in accuracy.
